Workshop

About the workshops

Nisali Siriwardene has a background in architecture; she graduated from Liverpool John Moores with a first-class degree and the best overall performance award for the BSc Honours in Architecture 2022. Now she is pursuing her master's degree in architecture. Painting, however, has always been her passion. She started her artistic career professionally in 2016, and even though she studied Western music and physical science in school, she showed extraordinary talent in art.

Nisali is a self-taught artist; she started her artistic journey with acrylics and oil paints and developed her skills and techniques to a broader level with her techniques and practice. She explored her creative journey to greater depths using more mediums such as markers, coloured pencils, and watercolours. Her expressions and sensitivity are always carried with colours; she brightly looks at the world; the hues, light, and shadows create stories of her life. She developed her skills, basics, and techniques by joining an art academy in her home country, Sri Lanka. With their expertise, she was able to conduct her workshops not only for youngsters but also for university students and adults.

Over the years, she has devoted herself to mastering the intricacies of a wide range of artistic mediums. The fluid grace of watercolours allows her to capture the ephemeral beauty of moments; the fast, quick dry medium encourages her to sketch while travelling; and she can easily carry the small set of equipment to work at any time. She delved into the nuanced world of freehand portrait sketching, where the human face becomes a canvas for exploring emotions, expressions, and the essence of each subject.

The natural world has always been a profound source of inspiration for her. Through her landscape paintings, she endeavours to capture and convey the serenity and grandeur of our environment. From the towering majesty of mountains to the tranquil shores of lakes and beautiful beaches, her work invites viewers to immerse themselves in the breathtaking beauty of our planet. Her background in architecture has endowed her with a unique perspective, particularly evident in her ability to create perspective drawings. She brings architectural visions to life through the convergence of lines and angles, crafting a sense of depth and dimension.

Getting back into painting after decades of not doing it was daunting, but this meetup was exactly what I needed. Nisali explains technique very well and demonstrates with her own painting as well as being on hand to guide and advise on each student's work. Everyone in the class was friendly and it was a thoroughly enjoyable session. I am very much inspired and looking forward to the next meetup.
